2016 Open Preview : Day of Destiny

The Open Championship Preview
Last Updated : 12th July, 2016 By Steve A

Dustin Johnson had to wait a long time to win his first Major but finally succeeded at the US Open. Our preview looks ahead to the British Open at Troon and whether the American can continue his great form.

Wedge Works Wonders for Dustin

Dustin Johnson had been threatening to win a Major for a fair while. After a few mishaps and near-misses he finally struck gold when winning the US Open. He followed that win up with a win in the WGC International and he's now up to number two in the world ranking. It's often the case that there's a key element of your game that is holding you back or in my case the whole game. For Johnson it was his wedge play that was causing problems and this year has seen a big improvement in that area leading to great success.

He's impressive from the tee and that has improved too with a switch from a draw to a power fade meaning he no longer hooks the ball as much as he has in the past. This time last year it was Jordan Speith who was dominating the game, now it's Dustin Johnson and he is a major threat (pardon the pun) this week.

Could This Be His Day?

World Number one Jason Day is certainly consistent when it matters most. He won the USPGA title last year, finished fourth at the Open and ninth in the US Open. So far in 2016 he's finished tenth in the Masters and eighth in the US Open. Five straight top ten finishes in Majors plus three major titles in the States, including a four shot win at the Players tournament means he comes to Troon full of confidence that he can win his first Open.

Stenson Bids For First Open

Ranked sixth in the world and with ten wins on the European tour, Henrik Stenson is a live contender for this title. He's had a top three finish in the Open on three previous occasions. With a long drive that is regularly accurate and pretty useful with a long iron he definitely has the game to win the Open one day, perhaps this week. He's in form too with a recent win in the BMW International. A free bet used each-way on the Swede could well pay dividends.

Consistent Scott a Danger

Adam Scott hasn't won a Major since 2013 but he's one of the most consistent players around when it comes to the Open. He's finished in the top ten for the past four tournaments  It's always a good sign when a player arrives early for the Open and Scott has done just that as he aims to finally get an Open title under his belt. He's definitely a good each-way bet here.
