It has been a miserable trip Down Under for England over the winter and, although their chances improve in the shorter form of cricket, Australia will still continue their dominance in the ODI series.

England were battered 4-0 in the Ashes test series and morale will be low in the squad, although there are some fresh faces around to keep things lively. Most notably, Alex Hales, Jason Roy, Jos Buttler, Adil Rashid, Liam Plunkett, although Ben Stokes won’t return until the T20 series.

Plainly outclassed in the test matches, England are much closer to Australia over 50 overs, especially thanks to their explosive batting line-up. Their victory over Cricket Australia on Thursday saw them field a top seven of Roy, Johnny Bairstow, Hales, Eoin Morgan, Buttler, Moeen Ali and Sam Billings, and that is still with Joe Root to return.

However, the Aussies are extremely difficult to beat on their home soil, especially at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), where this contest is being played on Sunday. They have won nine of the last 10 ODIs they have played in Melbourne, although they did lose the last one, against Pakistan in January.

They have a pretty domineering batting line-up themselves, opening up with Aaron Finch and David Warner and with the world’s best batsman, Steve Smith, coming in after that.

England will also have to deal with the same pace attack that haunted them through the test series – Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood. The only reprieve is that spinner Nathan Lyon is not in the ODI squad.

England have won once in their last 10 contests with Australia at the MCG – in February 2007 when a Paul Collingwood century won the game and the likes of Saj Mahmood and Jamie Dalrymple were in the wickets for the tourists.

If England’s batting can come off then they are always in any game, but the safe bet is to back the hosts, even at a skinny best price of 4/7 with Stan James.

The same bookmaker is clearly feeling very generous as they are not only offering the best price on an Australia win, but also an outrageously good price on the hosts managing the highest opening partnership.

Whilst Australia are odds-on across the board, Stan James are offering 6/5 on them to score the highest opening partnership of the game, which looks far too good to turn down. Finch and Warner is a superb opening pair and on home soil against a below-par pace attack could go very big. It’s a fantastic price that should not be missed.’s Predictions

It is a short price but Australia actually don’t look bad value to win the first One Day International at 4/7 with Stan James.

The Aussies look sensational and unmissable value at 6/5 with Stan James to score the highest opening partnership.
