Brighton V Manchester City Preview : It's a tough start for newly-promoted Brighton
Event Venue: Amex Stadium, Kick off: 17:30. BT Sport.See Stats
Brighton have become the last first-timers to make their way to the Premier League and they start with one of the toughest tests available - a bout against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. The Seagulls threw away the Championship title on the final day of the season last term and City were nowhere near the title when Chelsea claimed it. Thus, we have two teams with plenty to prove when they meet at the Amex Stadium in Saturday's late kickoff.
Brighton were mightily impressive as they rampaged their way through England's second tier last season. Glenn Murray showed once again the penchant he has for scoring goals at that level while Anthony Knockaert was arguably the best player in the division. But, what have they added to their ranks since promotion? Well, they have acquired Chelsea starlet Izzy Brown on loan and they have secured just two permanent deals for little-known Mathias Normann and Markus Suttner. Hughton must have his scouts about to pick those two up, but the spine of their side is already established. Lewis Dunk has been one of the best defenders in the Championship for a while and his partnership with Shane Duffy was very impressive last term. With the impressive Solly March and Dale Stephens also in the side, it seems as if Hughton is going to give the players that got him up every chance.
Manchester City were always going to spend big this summer with several of their long-standing squad some way north of 30. But, precious few expected them to splash nearly £100m on full-backs Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy, as good as they both are. They also spent a huge fee on goalkeeper Ederson who starred in the Champions League for Benfica last season and, of course, Monaco starlet Bernardo Silva who adds to the vast array of talent boss Pep Guardiola has going forward. Gabriel Jesus, Sergio Aguero, Kevin de Bruyne, Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling are other forward options at the club and when one looks at that, it's hard to look past them. If they are firing on all cylinders this season, nobody will be able to stop them as they march towards the title.
City have looked really good in pre-season and many of their rivals are going to struggle to live with them at full tilt, much less a newly-promoted side that hasn't done much investing at all. Even worse, Brighton like to play football and at home, they will get a serious lesson from the master of the game and his side, Pep Guardiola.
- Brighton are playing in the Premier League for the first time
- Man City have spent around £400m since Pep Guardiola arrived at the club
- Brighton have only made two new permanent signings this summer
