England v South Africa 2nd Test Betting Preview : Dominant hosts will romp to another win
Event Venue: Trent Bridge, Nottingham, 11AM, Friday July 14. Live on Sky Sports 2.See Stats
England did not quite put in a perfect performance in the first test at Lord’s, but they were so significantly better than South Africa nonetheless that it scarcely mattered.
The contest started terribly for the hosts with both openers falling cheaply in the first innings, but a brilliant 190 from captain Joe Root dug England out of trouble. Their bowling was a little hit-and-miss in South Africa’s first innings and they batted quite poorly in the second.
However, the complete implosion of the tourists in their final outing with the bat and some excellent spin bowling from Moeen Ali meant a comfortable win for England, when it could and should have been a lot more difficult.
A clear victory for Root and his men means that they will field the same XI in the second test, but the Proteas will make at least a couple of changes. Captain Faf du Plessis will return after attending the birth of his child, and will likely replace struggling JP Duminy.
Kagiso Rabada will miss out due to his aggressive antics in the first test leading to a ban – this will see either Chris Morris or Duanne Olivier coming into the side.
De Plessis’ return will undoubtedly be a plus for the tourists, but the change in the bowling attack is not going to do them any favours.
The venue is also not going to help the visitors too much. Trent Bridge has been something of a stronghold for the English in recent years, winning six and drawing one of their last seven tests in Nottingham. They have won nine of the last 12 tests dating back to 2003.
South Africa have only played at Trent Bridge twice in the last 20 years and they have lost on both occasions – history is certainly in England’s favour.
With all this in mind it is no surprise England are clear favourites, especially as the weather is set fair for the five days of the test. The best price is 8/13 with sportingBET which is not going to make you tremendously rich, but it looks a safe bet nonetheless.
There is better value to be had elsewhere when looking at the Englishmen who very much enjoy a trip to Nottingham.
Stuart Broad and Joe Root are the two that enjoy visiting Trent Bridge more than most others in world cricket.
Broad has played seven tests on the ground, in which he has taken 34 wickets at an average of 18.58. These figures are propped up, to an extent, by his unforgettable 8/15 against Australia in 2015 but he is still consistently good on his home ground and capable of magic.
Root is in fine fettle after his massive century at Lord’s and his record in Nottingham is superb, averaging 106 with the bat in three test there. His last two visits there in the longest format have yielded big tons against India and Australia.
It’s a very short price but there seems every reason to back England to win at 8/13 with sportingBET after a crushing win to start the series and due to their dominance at Trent Bride.
Stuart Broad looks an excellent price at 4/1 with Betfair to be England’s top bowler on his home ground.
Joe Root might be favourite, but he still seems generously priced at 11/4 with Coral to be his side’s top batsman.
- Joe Root reached 12 test centuries in the first test, the second quickest man to do so for England after Herbert Sutcliffe
- Hashim Amla is now just eight runs away from 8000 test runs and 82 runs behind AB De Villiers in third place on his country’s all-time list.
- England’s test record against South Africa now stands at 59-32 in their favour, with 55 draws.
