Event Venue: Riviera Country Club, California, Thursday February 15th at 13:00. Live on Sky Sports.See Stats
Tommy Fleetwood has gone from outside the top 100 in the world rankings over the last fours years to a career high of his current position of 14th. He can continue his progress into the top 10 by winning this week’s Genesis Open on the PGA Tour. Fleetwood is sixth in the betting and the players at a shorter price are major champions. You can back Fleetwood or your selection with a bookie golf free bet.
The Genesis Open under its different names has been played since 1926. The host course in 54 of those years has been Riviera Country Club in southern California which is again the site for the event as it has been since 1999. Riviera is a traditional course which puts a premium on course management above any other skill. There is no advantage from length or accuracy but a player requires a good all round game to contend. It’s a par 71 track with only three par 5s and a tough closing hole.
This week’s event is the final leg of the West Coast Swing before the Tour moves east to Florida and a World Golf Championship event in Mexico. The field includes Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson (33/1 with bet365) who are the latest of 16 multiple winners. Mickelson was the champion in 2008 and 2009 and Dustin Johnson is now trying to emulate him with back to back wins. The world number one won by five strokes last year and is now the record earner in the history of the tournament. He has made the top 10 seven times in 10 appearances at Riviera.
Johnson looked all over the winner in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am last week but struggled over the weekend and finished tied second. This week’s greens are below average in size and similar to those at Pebble Beach. Johnson combines decent course form and current form and is the player to beat. However, bookmakers are giving nothing away and Johnson’s price is too short to contemplate a bet. Rory McIlroy would probably swap 10 Genesis Opens for that elusive Masters so is overlooked.
Jordan Spieth (12/1 with Ladbrokes) has a solid record on the course and has excellent course management skills. He has made the top 25 in three stars but is having problems on the greens. The efficient way he plots his way around the course can not compensate for his putting woes. Justin Thomas has been solid and consistent and not threatening to win but Mickelson cannot be dismissed based on current and course form. However, Fleetwood is the main tip.
The Southport based player leads the European Tour in greens in regulation. He is playing at Riviera for the first time but on the back of a win in Abu Dhabi and a sixth placed finish in Dubai. This is Fleetwood’s second start as a PGA member and he finished tied 20th in the limited field He can take his game to a new level by winning the 2018 Genesis Open and making further moves towards the pinnacle of the men’s game.
