Midweek Premier League Previews : Do or Die in Swansea
Event Venue: various grounds, Tuesday 8 May to Thursday 10 May. Live on Sky Sports.See Stats
The Premier League season is drawing to a close but there's still lots to play for. Our preview looks ahead to the important midweek fixtures that affect the top four and the relegation places.
Swansea City v Southampton - Tuesday 8 May 7.45pm
Relegation battles don't come much bigger than this one. A defeat at Bournemouth took Swansea into the bottom three on Saturday. It's only on goal difference but could have been worse but for the late Everton equalizer that cost Southampton three points in the tea-time kick off. A win for Swansea will take them three points clear of Southampton but with an inferior goal difference but with the Saints having to host Manchester City on the final day of the season and Swansea home to Stoke, that's nearly safe. Form is disappointing though with no wins in their last seven league games and three straight defeats.
As for Southampton, they know this is a game they have to win and definitely dare not lose. Three points woud virtually make them safe but they struggle on their travels with only a win at West Brom in the last 16 away league games. They have picked up four points from their last two games though so will give this their best shot.
The fixtures computer does its magic again and Swansea City end with two final home games against their main relegation rival and relegated Stoke City. They aren't in form though and may struggle to get the win here that would greatly boost their survival hopes. Southampton rarely win away and this would be a magical moment to get a victory but the best bet here is to go for under 2.5 goals to be scored with both teams not exactly high scorers.

Chelsea v Huddersfield Town - Wednesday 9 May 7.45pm
Chelsea beat Liverpool at the weekend to keep alive their hopes of making it into the Champions League rather than some Thursday night football. The Blues have won their last five league and cup games with three clean sheets in a row. With Huddersfield Town not exactly regular goal scorers, their defence may have another easy night.
The home side are two points behind fourth placed Tottenham and after this home match, followed by a trip to out-of-form Newcastle United, there's a good chance they can get two wins meaning Spurs would need at least four points from their final two games and Liverpool would have to beat Brighton at Anfield in their final match.
Meanwhile, Huddersfield Town aren't safe from relegation yet. They are 16th and three points clear of both Swansea City and Southampton but with an inferior goal difference. If there's a positive result in the Swansea v Southampton game on Tuesday, Huddersfield will drop to 17th but know a point from this game will keep them in England's top league. Their final game is at home to Arsenal so not an easy run-in at all. They continue to have problems scoring with just two goals in the last eight. If they do survive, going out and getting a goal scorer or two is their key aim during the summer.
Chelsea have to win this game to keep the heat on Tottenham and will be confident of a sixth straight win. Huddersfield Town are still battling to save their place in the Premier League and will have received a confidence boost with the goalless draw at Manchester City on Sunday though City had 15 chances. Chelsea can be backed to win this game to nil.
Current odds for Chelsea to win to nil are 3/4 with Ladbrokes (18+ Ts & Cs Apply)
Tottenham v Newcastle United - Wednesday 9 May 8pm
A few weeks ago, Tottenham seemed assured of their top four finish and another season in the Champions League. However, they have only won one of their last four league games and go into this match only two points clear of fifth placed Chelsea but with a superior goal difference. Two home matches against Newcastle United and Leicester City should be enough to keep their noses ahead of Chelsea with both opponents with nothing to play for. Tottenham dominated the game at West Brom on Saturday but just couldn't convert that into goals and ended up losing 1-0. Only Manchester City have beaten them in their last sixteen home games and with their main players all fit, they just have to turn possession into goals.
Newcastle United have done well to maintain their place in the Premier League for another season and are 10th in the table despite losing to Watford at the weekend. That was their third straight league defeat and it looks like now they are safe, they just want the season to end. They have only won one of their last eight away league games and this looks like a long trip down south in midweek for another defeat..
Tottenham are rather limping towards the end of the season but need to get their foot back on the pedal and win this game. Newcastle have seemingly reached 'job done' stage and this preview believes Tottenham can get a vital three points winning on a -1 handicap.
