The Week Ahead In Sports Betting

It is a busy week of sport over the next seven days with two rounds of Premier League fixtures, the Super Bowl, the Six Nations getitng underway and England's tour of West Indies continuing.

There is something to cater to all tastes, and here are some bits of value that will be worth a look at over the next week.

Wednesday 30 January - Tottenham vs Watford

It has not been a good couple of weeks for Spurs in terms of results and when it comes to injury problems. Harry Kane and Dele Alli being ruled out has really left Tottenham in a sticky situation and they are struggle for fluency in attack without them. Heung-Min Son may be back in the team after his jaunt to the Asian Cup, but it may still not be enough to give Spurs their verve back going forward.

Watford have been enjoying a much better time of things of late, without defeat in six in all competitions. There have also been three clean sheets in that time, so they are more than capable of frustrating teams.

The Hornets will be looking to keep it tight and would be very happy with a draw at Wembley, so do not be surprised if Spurs struggle to break them down over the contest. Any result is possible, but there is very unlikely to be many goals in this one, with Spurs blunt in attack and Watford happy to sit back and defend.

Thursday 31 January - West Indies v England Second Test

England were pretty appalling in the first test of the series with West Indies, taking an absolute hammering at the hands of their hosts in Bridgetown. There is just a few days rest between the first and second contests and the bookmakers are expecting a significant turnaround in the next match in North Sound.

England’s preparation for the first test was not the best and they should certainly improve in the next clash, but such was the disparity between the teams in Bridgetown, they have to be considered good value as distant underdogs.

There are still big question marks over some of the England side with Keaton Jennings still struggling at the top of the order, Johnny Bairstow not cemented at number three, Adil Rashid really looking bad in the first test and Stuart Broad likely to come in with zero preparation of his own.

England will improve, but the Windies look superb value to beat the team that they walloped just a few days ago.

Friday 1 February - The Masters Darts

The 2019 PDC season gets underway on Friday with the Masters begins in Milton Keynes, with the top 16 players in the world battling it out for the £60,000 top prize.

Michael van Gerwen is defending his title and is coming into the tournament having won his third World Championship just last month. MVG is comfortably the best player on the planet at the moment and he is odds-on to lift the trophy in MK with some bookmakers.

That is completely understandable given how dominant he was at the World Championship and how his main competitors such as Gary Anderson, Peter Wright and Rob Cross didn’t really look anywhere near his level at Alexandra Palace.

It is a short price before a tournament even begins, but MVG at EVENS is actually good value given how good he is at the minute.

France vs Wales

The 2019 Six Nations tournament begins on Friday night in Paris where Wales take on France with both teams looking to gain some momentum in the competition.

It appears to be the most competitive fixture in the first weekend of Six Nations action, with little between the sides in the odds. However, it has been a very one-sided record between the two countries in recent years.

The Welsh have won six of the last seven meetings with the French, with their only loss coming by just two points at the 2017 Six Nations. France have also not been in the best of form in recent internationals, certainly not impressive enough to suggest they can improve this poor head-to-head record. Defeat to Fiji last time out in November is not overly encouraging. Wales look the best value in this clash.

Saturday 2 February - Crystal Palace v Fulham

Not the most eye-catching fixture of the Premier League weekend, but one that provides some pretty good value in a London derby at Selhurst Park.

Fulham are in pretty atrocious form and are still in serious danger of relegation despite the arrival of Claudio Ranieri in the dugout. The Cottagers have lost their last four matches in all competitions, and while those fixtures included Arsenal and Spurs, they also featured Oldham in the FA Cup and Burnley in the Premier League.

Palace have not been especially consistent this season, but they are coming off an impressive cup win over Tottenham on Sunday, they also came very close to getting something away to Liverpool in their previous match. They are looking solid and appear to be much more of a threat up front than they did earlier in the season.

Palace should be comfortable favourites to win this one and they are, but are still good value to pick up three points.

Ireland v England

Ireland are the odds-on favourites to win the 2019 Six Nations having won it last year with five victories from five games. Plenty of people are expecting the exact same thing to happen again in 2019.

The Irish showed that they have continued that fine form past the Six Nations as they beat New Zealand at Lansdowne Road in November. Simply put, if a side can see off the All Blacks then they should not have much trouble at all with any of the European sides.

Ireland won this fixture 24-15 last year at Twickenham and we can expect a similarly if not more comfortable result when the teams meet in Dublin this weekend.

The favourites are a tiny price to win the match, but they look much more tempting with a -9 handicap and are certainly worth a punt at that.

Sunday 3 February – Super Bowl LIII

The 2019 Super Bowl is a repeat of the 2002 clash as New England Patriots take on the Los Angeles Rams and the bookies just about fancy the same result as that of 17 years ago. The Patriots won that match in Louisiana, although they were significant underdogs at the time, things have changed since.

Tom Brady was the MVP of that game in 2002 and he is the favourite to be once again, at 41-years-old in Atlanta, Georgia. With the Patriots favourites to win the game and Brady maintaining the sensational form that has seen him compete in the NFL for nearly two decades, there is little to suggest that he cannot pick up a fifth Super Bowl MVP award.

He is already the record-holder in this regard and he is well capable of extending his historic lead.
