The Week In Sports Betting Preview

There is something for every sports fan this week and that means plenty to put your money on.

As ever, there is no shortage of football action as the Premier League season rumbles on, and its darts namesake also begins this week. We also have England in Test cricket action, the Six Nations continuing apace after an incredible opening weekend, and Ultimate Fighting Championship fights from Melbourne, Australia.

There is plenty to watch and there should be just as much value to be had as we talk you through the week in sport.

Thursday 7 February - Premier League Darts

The new season of Premier League Darts begins on Thursday night in Newcastle and there should be some cracking matches as the campaign gets underway.

A seemingly evenly balanced clash between Gerwyn Price and Daryl Gurney takes place in the north east, but when you look at the head-to-head between them it is anything but even. Price has beaten Gurney seven times, while the Northern Irishman has repaid the favour just once.

Both had dreadful World Championship and Masters campaigns, so neither are coming into this one with much confidence or momentum, so we can assume they will revert to type and Price will have the edge over the Players Championship winner.

Price is the underdog at 9/5 with Unibet which looks far too good to turn down.

Another very decent price is James Wade to beat Raymond van Barneveld at 5/4 with Betfair. Wade reached the Masters final on Sunday and will be buoyed, despite defeat to Michael van Gerwen in the showpiece.

Barney has been in terrible form for months and was trounced 11-2 by Wade when they last met in November. That Machine should be a much shorter price than he is.

Saturday 9 February - Fulham v Man Utd

The early kick-off in the Premier League on Saturday sees Manchester United travel to Fulham and they should return north with a pretty comfortable three points.

United are still without defeat since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over as manager, while Fulham are 19th in the table with the worst defence in the division. Claudio Ranieri’s side have conceded an incredible 55 goals in just 25 Premier League games this season.

Even before the Jose Mourinho shackles were removed from the Red Devils they walloped Fulham 4-1 in December, now under the new free-wheeling regime, there is no reason why there wouldn’t be a defeat of at least the same margin.

Depending on how daring you are feeling, there is plenty of value giving United a big handicap, but it looks a safe and very good bet to back the visitors with a -1 handicap.

Manchester United to win (-1) looks extremely good at 17/10 with Paddy Power

West Indies v England 3rd Test

It is quite incredible that England can be absolutely dominated in the first two Tests with West Indies and go into the third one as odds-on favourites. Victories by 381 runs and 10 wickets for the home nation have not been enough to convince the bookmakers that the Windies are good enough to win the third and final contest.

Yes captain Jason Holder is suspended for the last Test, and it is sometimes the case that with the series secured there is less motivation, but West Indies have been so far superior to their visitors that they are undoubtedly excellent value as underdogs in Gros Islet.

England’s batsmen are woefully out of form, with their best team total of 246 all out being lower than West Indies’ worst team effort. It will take a huge turn in form for England to win this one and it seems unlikely.

West Indies to win at 13/8 with Ladbrokes looks sensational value.

UFC 234 – Robert Whittaker v Anderson Silva

The main event at UFC 234 in Melbourne, Australia sees middleweight champion Robert Whittaker putting his strap on the line against Kelvin Gastelum. Whittaker will have the fans on his side as he is based Down Under and has a great record in Australia, winning all five of his UFC fights that have taken place there.

The champ is on a nine-fight winning streak dating way back to 2014 and has never lost at middleweight, in eight bouts. Gastelum comes into this fight with three losses in his last nine and a no contest in there for good measure.

KG has some very good names on his record, but they are exclusively fighters who were past their best when he met them; the likes of Michael Bisping, Johny Hendricks and Tim Kennedy. Having moved up from welterweight, he just doesn’t quite have the CV at 185lbs to suggest he can dethrone the impressive ‘Reaper’.

Whittaker has nine knockouts in 20 wins, while Gastelum has a very decent chin, so this one should go the full five rounds and the champion looks great at 12/5 with Paddy Power to win by decision.

Sunday 10 February - Six Nations - England v France

These two sides had entirely contrasting results over the opening weekend of the 2019 Six Nations Championship as the tournament was blown wide open thanks to the first round of fixtures. France relinquished a 16-point lead to lose at home to Wales, while England shocked everyone to comfortably beat Ireland in Dublin.

England have now usurped the Irish as the odds-on favourite to win the tournament, and are unsurprisingly a tiny price to beat the French at Twickenham on Sunday. There is no value at all in backing the home side at just 1/5 so we will have to look elsewhere.

Although England will surely win this one, it might be a bit closer than the bookies suggest. The home team are odds-on with some bookmakers to win with a -13 handicap, which looks a little bit generous. Rarely are matches between these two countries so wide in scoreline, in fact, only one of the last 12 matches have been so one-sided.

Therefore, we should be looking at backing the team that won’t win, but back them in the hefty +12 handicap market. The visitors are EVENS with Betfair to win this with a +12 handicap and that looks very decent indeed.
