Last weekend saw the return of the German Bundesliga. It was all a bit strange with social distancing and no fans but it was good to see the league resume. Our preview looks ahead to the next set of fixtures as Bayern Munich host Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund travel to Wolfsburg.

Saturday 23 May

Borussia Monchengladbach v Bayer Leverkusen - 2.30pm KO

Third placed Borussia Monchengladbach host Bayer Leverkusen who are two places and just two points behind them. Both sides made winning returns after the suspension of the Bundesliga in March. Monchengladbach are only six points adrift of league leaders Bayern Munich and two behind second-placed Borussia Dortmund. The rest of this season will see them trying to get closer to Bayern but more likely, bidding to ensure they stay in the top four and qualify for the Champions League.

Monchengladbach had a 3-1 away win at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday. They got the game off to a great start with a goal in the first minute, followed by a second six minutes later. They have just the one loss in their last eight league games, a home loss to Dortmund. Home form has been good this season with nine wins out of 13 in the league and only Dortmund have won more on home soil. Between September of last year and January of 2020, they won eight home league games in a row scoring 25 goals. Their only other home loss has been to Leipzig but they have conceded in 11 of their last 12 home league games.

Bayer Leverkusen also had a good result as the league resumed. They had to wait until Monday to play but recorded a 4-1 away win at struggling Werder Bremen. Two goals from Kai Havertz took them to a half-time lead of 2-1 and they continued their dominance in the second half. They were carrying on the good form from before the suspension and have won seven of their last nine league games. Rangers fans won't need reminding that Leverkusen won the first leg of their Europa League game 3-1 at Ibrox. Away form in the Bundesliga has seen them win four of their last six games. A bet on both teams scoring in this game looks one to make.

Wolfsburg v Borussia Dortmund - 2.30pm KO

Borussia Dortmund had a great win at the weekend with a 4-0 home demolition of Schalke 04. Erlin Haland opened the scoring and two goals from Raphael Guerreiro took then to within a point of league leaders Bayern Munich. That only lasted for a day but a win at Wolfsburg will again take them to a point behind Bayern.

Dortmund have won their last five league games by an aggregate score of 13-1. Their main strength though is the home form this season. They are the only side yet to lose a home league game with 33 points out of 39. Away form is a slight problem though and they have already lost four Bundesliga games with 23 goals conceded. Their most recent away form has improved though with three wins in four. They have scored in each of their last seven away league fixtures but conceded in six of the last eight.

Wolfsburg are sixth in the Bundesliga and unlikely to climb any higher. That's because they trail fifth placed Bayer Leverkusen by 11 points. They won't mind finishing sixth though as that is the final qualifying place for the Europa League with a two-point lead over over Freiburg. That's a healthier situation for them, helped by the fact that only one of the sides placed below them in the table won at the weekend. Wolfsburg lost ground on fifth due to a run of three straight defeats but since then are unbeaten in seven league games with four wins.

The weekend saw them win 2-1 at Augsburg but they needed a 90th minute goal to get the three points. Home form them in patchy form with only four victories in 13. Only three have been lost but six drawn including three of the last five. Only one of their last five home league games have been won and this is a tough game against in-form Dortmund. They haven't conceded in their last two but they will do well to maintain that record. An away win for Dortmund is the likely result here.

Bayern Munich v Eintracht Frankfurt - 5.30pm KO

Bayern Munich maintained their four point lead at the top after a 2-0 win at Union Berlin with a goal in each half. That victory made it ten wins and a draw from their last 11 league games. In that time, Bayern have scored with 40 goals scored and only six conceded. The last three have been won by an aggregate score of 10-0. In all competitions, they have kept five straight clean sheets. Home form has produced nine league wins with only 11 goals conceded in 13 games. They have 16 points from their last six home league games and another one looks very much on the cards here.

It's a worrying time for Eintracht Frankfurt. Last season saw them go all the way through to the semi-finals of the Europa League, only to lose on penalties to Chelsea. This season, they find themselves trying to avoid relegation from the Bundesliga. They are only five points above the relegation play-off position and resumed their season with a 3-1 home loss to Borussia Monchengladbach. That was their fourth straight defeat with 13 goals conceded. Not the kind of form you need when playing Bayern Munich away from home.

Even worse is the fact that they have the worst away record in the Bundesliga. Just two out of 12 away games have been won and nine have ended in defeat. They have only scored 11 goals on their travels, conceding 25. Their last two away league fixtures have been at Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund. Both ended in 4-0 defeats and another bad result looms. A bet on Bayern to win with over 2.5 goals scored is the tip.
