Consider Today's Events before placing your bet

There are no live matches in the UK today so the main betting action is the One Day Cup match between Hampshire and Surrey. Both teams are playing their second fixture and the home team in Hampshire are marginally preferred at 4/5 with Ladbrokes. There are clay court tournaments in Geneva (men) and Strasbourg (women) and qualifiers for the French Open. There are Flat meetings at Carlisle, Redcar, Windsor and Leicester and they race over jumps at Towcester. The live televised greyhounds comes from tracks at Yarmouth and Nottingham.

World Cup News

Odds quoted below are correct as at May 19th and are subject to change.

Now that the Premier League season is over and the FA Cup Final and Champions League Final are imminent attention will soon be turned to the most popular and watched sports event around the world. The summer Olympics attract a huge global audience but that is a multi-sport occasion with many niche events which are only of interest to a specific group. The big track and field finals in athletics are watched all around the world but the football World Cup is bigger for viewing and betting. There are 32 competing nations split into eight groups of four teams. The top two teams in each group progress to the knockout matches which could be decided on penalties. Brazil are the current favourites at 9/2 with Ladbrokes to win the World Cup.

Gareth Southgate has announced his 23 man squad and two facts stand out. There are only 5 survivors from the 2014 squad and Gary Cahill is the only player who has won more than 50 caps. England play Tunisia in their first match and Panama are their second opponents before a meeting with Belgium which should decide which team wins the group. In the past England have stumbled through the group and come up short against stronger opponents. It would be far better to score goals and gain some momentum in the first two group matches which would build up confidence for the tougher fixtures later in the tournament. Expectations are low and Harry Kane must be at his best and even then reaching the quarter-finals is probably the best that can be expected. England are 16/1 with William Hill to win the World Cup.

Why Are Free Bets Used by Bookmakers?

The online betting industry is fiercely competitive especially amongst the leading UK brands such as Ladbrokes, William Hill and bet365. Some firms compete on the odds while others offer an extensive range of betting markets such as singles, doubles, trebles, multiple and system bets. However, one common theme is free bets and concessions for new and existing customers. These offers can run all year round or relate to the specific events such as the Cheltenham Festival and World Cup. Free bet marketing activity is most prevalent at the time of the major sporting events.

The betting landscape has changed since the start of the century. A betting exchange offers more bets, win, each way and place. These firms make money by charging commission for winning bets. Accordingly, they offer more attractive odds for all types of bet. Customers bet against each other by backing and laying in a peer-to-peer betting environment. Betting exchanges do not offer combination bets such as the Yankee, Canadian and Lucky 15 but higher odds.

However, free bets are the most widespread marketing tool in attracting new customers and maintaining the loyalty of existing customers. In effect they are are the betting industry’s equivalent of the high street store’s sales incentives where you can use a free bet to back a favourite, underdog or outsider. In taking up such an offer, you must bear in mind that some of the promotions are subject to restrictive terms and conditions which negate the benefits. In the case of a dispute you can refer the matter to the UK Gambling Commission or Independent Bookmaker’s Arbitration Service (IBAS).

Free bets and bonuses are heavily promoted in the Racing Post, the national Press and on commercial television. Some of the offers are attractive and provide a value bet. For example, many firms offer Best Odds Guaranteed on horse racing in Britain and Ireland and money back in the form of a free bet if one team fails to win in an accumulator. Other offers are less attractive.

Freebets.org.uk is all about betting and we review the best online bookmakers. The site highlights the best special bets which relate to many betting markets including correct score, first goal scorer and first half bet in soccer. Most online bookmakers now offer a cash out facility which allows you to close a bet before expiry to guarantee a profit or limit losses. Our bookmaker reviews highlight the best of these features.

Bookmakers compete for new customers and try to keep existing customers by offering the free bet. Dedicated websites highlight the best offers with banners and affiliate links to online operators. Bonus and promotional codes are used by these sites to ensure they receive commission for converting new customers. The affiliate market is now well developed but "New Customer Open Account Offers" are increasingly taking over from content in establishing the links between affiliate and bookmaker. Other sites document the journey that customers take from being attracted by a free bet offer to placing a bet and maximising winnings or minimising losses.

Customer loyalty is fundamental to business success and online betting is massively competitive. The key factors in choosing which online bookmakers to engage with were recently highlighted in the Racing Post with reference to research conducted by Barclays. The most important factors were identified as follows:

  • Free bet offers: 46%
  • Brand reputation: 37%
  • Best odds: 27%
  • Quality of website: 25%
  • Others

The majority of mobile customers have more than one account. However, 38% of existing account holders have the propensity to open one more account. That suggests there is still scope for growth and justifies the cost and investment of offering free bets. Marketing has a key role to play and bookmakers spend millions on promoting free bets on television and in the national and betting-specific Press. Most national newspapers have collaborations with bookmakers.

The attractiveness of one particular sport is linked to the scope for live betting and event-specific free bet offers. Football and to a lesser degree other sports like tennis, cricket and both codes of rugby can take advantage of the limited nature of the live horse racing product. In an admittedly limited survey using a site that highlights free bets about four times as many were associated with football than racing. The offline market is centred less around racing and more about free bets on football and numbers games, lotteries and Fixed Odds Betting Terminals. Free sports bets are prevalent in the online market.

Matched Bets

Betting exchanges such as Betfair provide the means to lay off and match counter bets when free bets are offered. Betfair are perceived to offer the best odds and have the advantage of small betting margins. The exchange business model is based on taking commission from turnover and not profits written into the odds. Even so the lay price is always greater than the back price which equates to the small cost of matching bets.

The concept can be described as "backing high and laying low" to ensure a profit regardless of the outcome of a sporting bet. Timing is key because the odds could shift during the window of opportunity to place the back bet and the corresponding lay bet. Services such as Bonus Bagging highlight the free bet offers and provide step by step instructions to match bets. Arbitrage situations will not last long as the market responds to weight of money with odds changes.

Liquidity is vital for the efficient operation of an exchange. When looking to place a matched counter bet a customer must be confident the transaction will take place. The most trusted exchange bookmaker is Betfair. Others take smaller commissions but cannot guarantee liquidity as consistently as Betfair. The bigger commissions negate the better odds but on balance Betfair is the first port of call for customers who wish to lay a bet having backed the same option previously.

Ideally matched bets should be placed when there is no volatility in a market. In football matches this is before play begins or a half-time when no significant event can influence the odds. A goal totally changes the odds on offer and as Brian Clough said “it only takes a second to score a goal”. A bet put into the market just before a goal will not be matched when the goal is scored. Backing and laying using free bets is risk free when markets are fixed at specific times.

Bookmakers are aware that customers can lay off free bets with matched bets on an exchange. The specific procedure for calculating and placing counter bets is widely published and known. The bookmakers value new accounts highly and once signed up customers are directed to the more profitable products and services. Casino, lotteries and bingo are lucrative for the online operators and a new customer is a potential player of these games.

The Free Bet Journey

The following tick list should be worked through in order to complete the free bet journey:

  1. Identify a free bet
  2. Open an account
  3. Specify the bonus code if applicable
  4. Deposit funds
  5. Place qualifying bet
  6. Claim bonus
  7. Calculate staking and odds for counter bets
  8. Place counter matched bets
  9. Complete turnover requirement
  10. Withdraw funds

Types of Free Bet

Bookmaker free bet offers can be categorised as follows:

  • Deposit from new customers
  • Non-deposit for all customers
  • Event specific
  • Mobile Specific
  • Enhanced odds

All the leading online major bookmakers are competing in this area. Much of the marketing activity centres on major soccer matches in the Premier League and Champions League that are televised live. The new model targets a customer watching a football match in a social environment with the desire and technology to place a bet in-play. Fun and engagement are the latest buzzwords reflected in the following types of free bet:

Deposit

This type of free bet is generally specifically on offer for new customers who must make a deposit. Usually stringent terms and conditions apply and it really is a case of not ignoring the small print. Any deviation from the documented procedure will result in the free deposit bet being invalid. Generally the amount will correspond to the initial deposit and there is a range of allowable funding of the new account from a minimum to a maximum.

Non-Deposit

Non-deposit free bets are usually valid for new and existing customers. They are not dependent on funds being transferred into a betting account. These formats are much less widespread than the deposit specific type. The potential profit is hence much lower as the risk to the online bookmaker is higher. Betting margins mean turnover is paramount so the downside of easily achievable conditions is that non-deposit free bets are relatively low in value but can be utilised more often.

Event Specific

The market for these offers becomes more competitive for the major racing festivals and races and soccer tournaments. The quest for new and existing business is most intense during the Cheltenham Festival. This is the most popular meeting of the year and usually produces lucrative free bet promotions for the punter. The Grand National is the standalone race that generates most betting turnover but, surprisingly, free bets and promotions are actually reduced by the bookies for this event due to the nature of new customers being the householder, rather than the seasoned bettor, who will register and take the introductory funds but then never return again. The bookmaker ruthlessly regards this type of customer as "Low Value" and so can often withdraw the free bet for the Grand National event only. Specific live televised football matches in the Premier League and Champions League generate free bets and the soccer World Cup and European Championships both on a four year cycle lead to them being made available to new and existing customers.

Mobile Specific

More bets are now placed on mobile devices than on desktops so bookmakers are striving to get customers to use betting apps. All the major devices are covered and mobile versions can be accessed through a download or website link. However, only selected bookmaker apps are available on Google Play which does not allow all betting related applications. Some free bets are only available using the mobile version of a bookmaker’s betting products but they can be accessed through Android and iPhone.

Enhanced Odds

Live televised football matches generate enhanced odds because they attract large audiences including the casual and committed customers. Better odds are often associated with :

  1. a player to score
  2. a player to score and his team to win
  3. one team to win and both teams to score

These offers are often only available during a limited amount of time and staking restrictions apply. Double and treble odds are offered for specific events to take place such as a goal early in a match or a headed goal.  Bets are void if a player named for the purposes of enhanced odds does not play.

Sample Free Bets

At any given time there are a wide range of free bet offers for new and existing customers. They range from £10 to £200 but in some cases the terms and conditions are restrictive, in particular turnover requirements in a limited amount of time make the deal unattractive. Odds restrictions can also limit the benefits of a free bet as short priced favourites generally cannot be backed to use up the turnover requirements. Bookmakers that offer "Cash Out" or something similar will not allow these bets to count to make up the required level of settled bets before funds can be withdrawn.

Future Developments For Sign-Up Offers

Research is suggesting that by the end of 2018 most bets will placed during sports events and a bigger majority of wagers using an app on a mobile phone. Customers using a mobile to bet are more recreational than the traditional desktop bettors. The future trends will revolve around fun, social engagement and education and free bets will have a role to play. Spontaneous off-the-cuff betting will increase with less emphasis on odds comparison and more on the latest and most attractive free bet or promotion.

Horse racing is the traditional betting sport in the UK but in light of more in-play football betting has some serious funding issues to address. Several bookmakers have willingly helped the sport with contributions from overseas betting on British racing. Others faced with an ultimatum from the racing authorities are ending or not renewing sponsorship agreements. They will continue to move to other sports including football and offering attractive Sign-Ups will be part of that trend. The new breed of mobile bettors who have “never had it so good” can in future enjoy even better concessions.

The Trend For Free Bets

There have been some huge developments in the betting and gambling sector over the last four years or so. With the advent of social media came a huge influx of different one-man band betting entities who were able to quickly establish and enjoy an online presence. They began to offer tipping services or enticements for punters to register and successfully made money through this affiliate -based method. One cannot blame people, often youngsters, for doing this if the environment was there to allow it but unfortunately most of it was done without the proper regulation in place that the industry has seen over the past months and has been long overdue.

Throughout 2017, the industry saw massive regulatory changes with far stricter guidelines and compliance standards that needed to be adhered to, and rightly so. Even the terminology, particularly "Free Bet" came under close examination by the Gamblling Commission as the argument is and was in some cases : "Is it actually free?". The argument threw a huge debate open but led to some bookmakers having to change the name of the sign-up free bet to another name such as "Bonus", "Opening Account Offer", "Deposit Bonus" and various other connotations containing these words in order to correctly portray what the offer truly and actually reflected.

So thus began a large scale reduction in the term being used for the new Account Offers, and so one could quite understandably ask:

"Is This The Death Of The Free Bet?"

Well as always in these situations, the panic button can be reached for but if one examines the graph below, it can be clearly seen that the search volume in Google does not seem to have been affected :

Why is This?

The Term has been used now since the beginning of this century and so has become synonymous with opening account offers with bookmakers for many years. It is therefore engrained on any punters mind that if they want to open a new account they would search the term "Free Bets" to get the best range available form the largest range of bookmakers. Well, just like in the Insurance, Loans, Utlities and almost any other household commodity markets, the "Price Comparison" website has been the go-to tool to gain choice. The trend therefore, in the graph above, shows that the betting world, deposit all the seismic changes, still has the Free Bet at it's core.

The focus now is on making placing a bet attractive in a fun and social context. Engagement and sharing free bet offers on social media are part of that landscape. Major football tournaments are key opportunities for the bookmakers to provide incentives for customers to open an account. Free bet activity should intensify and mobile users are most likely to take advantage.

Each year the Cheltenham Festival reflects trends and new developments because bookmaker’s have a ready made and captive audience. Racecourses now provide Wi-Fi so mobile betting is more accessible but to the detriment of the betting ring.
