There was much expectation in Milan this season that the city's two clubs would recapture former glories. Both teams have seen big-money takeovers at board level and have embarked on big recruitment drives over the past 12 months in attempt to get themselves back to the top of Italian football. Inter have made a good start to the new season though things haven't been quite as good on the red half of the city. Who though will come out on top when the two great rivals clash, in one of Europe's great derby matches?

Strong start for Spalletti

Inter were taken over by Indonesian businessman Erick Thohir in 2013 whilst the club saw further investment in 2016 when Chinese billionaire Zhang Jidong purchased a majority share in the club. The ambitions have been to get the Nerazzurri back to competing for Serie A titles after years some showings in recent campaigns. They haven't won the title since Jose Mourinho left in 2010 and since then league finishes have been runners-up in 2011 before 9th, 5th, 8th, 4th and 7th. Quite frankly it has been nowhere near good enough for the money spent and since Mourinho's departure, 11 different men have been in the managerial hotseat.

The most recent incumbent Luciano Spalletti however appears to be on to something good and has started the new season with six wins and a draw. The former Roma boss is highly regarded in his home country and is now targeting his first ever Serie A title. Over the summer, Spalletti was able to keep hold of his two key men - Mauro Icardi and Ivan Perisic and the duo have both started this season in fine form and will present the biggest danger for their cross city rivals this weekend. Spalletti has also been able to install some much needed defensive solidity and so far this season the Inter backline - marshalled by Brazilian Miranda, have conceded only three goals. They've past their other big task so far by winning away to Roma and will now bid to keep up the pace at the top of the table with a win here.

Huge game for the Rossoneri

AC Milan spent huge amounts this summer after their own Chinese takeover but things have not gone quite to plan for Vincenzo Montella and co. They come in to this game with a league record of four wins and three defeats from their opening seven games, with two of those losses coming in their last two games. They have been beaten 4-1 at Lazio and in those last two outings 2-0 at the hands of Sampdoria away and Roma at home. Quite simply they have struggled when they've come up against decent opposition so it's easy to see why they come in to this game as the underdogs.

The pressure will be on Montella to get a result here and a third successive defeat would see them fall 10 points adrift of Inter already. It would be difficult to envisage them winning Serie A if they were to lose again and after this summer's outlay of over £160 million, for their title hopes to be effectively over in October would be disastrous.

Inter have really hit the ground running after Luciano Spalletti's summer arrival and when you consider their start to the season, coupled with their city rivals' record against the better teams, you have to back the Nerazzurri.
