Where should you place your Basketball free bet?

As with any team sports it will come of no surprise that for each match there is a win/lose market. What tends to be the case with basketball is that there is a clear odds-on favourite in each contest which makes accumulators on the favourites a more tempting prospect and a canny underdog selection all the more profitable.

A very popular bet, as with most American sports, is the point spread, otherwise known as handicap betting. This suits matches which have clear favourites as you can back them at a much more generous price to win by a certain margin or pick the underdogs to triumph if they had a head start by a number of points.

The in play markets are also a popular market when betting for free on basketball, it is a frenetic, fast-paced game though so be ready to go if you see a price you like because it will change in a matter of seconds. All the best odds and tips from us at FREEbets.org.uk are right here on this page just above.

The NBA is split into two Conferences, the Eastern and the Western and each has three Divisions within them. The obvious markets arise from that format as you can plump for the winner of each division and each conference from before a ball is touched right the way until the play-offs. The season runs from October to April each year with the play-offs then taking place from April to June.

Of course you can back the team who you fancy winning the NBA Championship from as early as you want as well but it is a mighty tricky thing to call before Christmas.

Other markets you can use your free basketball bet on include:

  • Point Spread
  • Total Points
  • Half Time/Full Time
  • Winning Margin
  • Team to Score First Basket
  • First Scoring Play
  • 1st Quarter Winner
  • Overtime?
  • Race To 10 Points
  • And loads more

The NBA

It swings in roundabouts in the NBA. Their draft system ensures that the teams who finish in the bottom slots of their conference have a chance to acquire the best young players in the country, or trade him away for a proven asset. To stay on top with the salary caps in place and the power players have in their contracts, building your dynasty can be a tough proposition for any general manager, but keeping it is even harder.

Most popular players

LeBron James

King James is the biggest household name out of anyone playing basketball on the planet - bar none. He was considered one of the greatest players of all-time even before the NBA Finals last year, but after he drove Cleveland to overturn a 3-1 Finals deficit - the first time anyone has ever managed that feat - against a 73-9 Golden State side and brought a championship to his home state, he became legendary. He led all players in points, assists, rebounds, steals and blocks in those Finals, too. James is a four-time MVP and 13-time All-Star.

Stephen Curry

Chef Curry is one-half of the 'Splash Bros' alongside backcourt partner Klay Thompson for the ultra-successful Golden State Warriors and it is not a stretch to say the point guard has helped revolutionise the game of basketball. The three-point shot has become far more prevalent because of Curry and there is no disputing his is the master of it. During the 2012–13 season, Curry set the NBA record for three-pointers made in a regular season with 272. He surpassed that record in 2015 with 286, and again in 2016 with 402. He won back-to-back MVP awards and is the only player to have won the award unanimously, which he did in 2016.

Kevin Durant

Durantula was the most talked about man in basketball last summer. After nine seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the 2014 MVP was a free agent on the open market and opted to sign with the Golden State Warriors, the very team that had just knocked him out of the playoffs after OKC squandered a 3-1 lead. KD is one of the best shooters in the NBA period, and he is just as good inside the D as he is out on the perimeter. Now that he is with the Warriors, everyone is expected them to romp to success in 2017.

Russell Westbrook

When KD left OKC, he left behind his superstar teammate Russell Westbrook. Brodie is an explosive point guard that has been doing phenomenal things since Durant departed and he is currently averaging a triple-double on the home straight of the 2016-17 season. Only one man has ever done that before, and that was Oscar Robertson in the 1960s, so that tells you what a feat it is. Russ will probably move to a bigger market in search of winning championships sooner or later, but for now, he is driving OKC to the playoffs and he is damn entertaining to watch. He is a two-time All-Star MVP and current MVP after averaging a triple-double last season, the first player to do so in 40 years.

James Harden

The Beard was always a great offensive player, but he has stepped it up to another level since coach Mike D'Antoni make him the point guard for the Houston Rockets. Prior to that, Harden was an excellent scorer at the two spot (shooting guard) but it looks like behind his flurry of triple-doubles, the Rockets look primed to take the second spot in the west behind the Warriors. The 27-year-old has become the face of Adidas and he is a five-time All-Star.

Kawhi Leonard

The San Antonio Spurs' small forward might not be one of the most popular men in the league in terms of his personality and presence, because, frankly, he doesn't really show/have any. But, when it comes to play on the court, he is the best two-way player in the league not named LeBron James, and arguably, better than him. He made his name guarding LeBron out of the 2014 NBA Finals and that earned him the Finals MVP award as well as a title. Now that Tim Duncan has retired, Leonard is tasked with leading the Spurs towards more titles and will be an MVP contender for year to come.

Carmelo Anthony

Melo is one of the most decorated college players you could ever wish to meet, but the small forward has not translated his success to the NBA. The 32-year-old finally got his trade to the Oklahoma City Thunder after rotting with the New York Knicks under Phil Jackson and his myraid of terrible decisions, but after the Zen Master left, Melo finally got his trade to a winner. Alongside Paul George and MVP Russell Westbrook, OKC can be a real threat to the Golden State Warriors in the West.

DeMarcus Cousins

Boogie is a popular player for maybe all the wrong reasons. He was recently traded to the New Orleans Pelicans for an underwhelming return, but given all the bad publicity the center brings with him, Sacramento were left in a tough spot when looking for deals. Regardless of that, Cousins is the best offensive man at the five spot since Shaquille O'Neal and we don't say that lightly. He can easily put up 30 points a night, the only thing in question is his temperment. Having said that, the fans love his nature.

Chris Paul

CP3 is the best pure playmaker in the NBA today. He can drop a dime before you know what's happened, and there is no better point guard at assessing the floor that Paul. The 31-year-old has not enjoyed championship success yet either, and he has now departed the Los Angeles Clippers to play alongside James Harden and make a superstar backcourt in Houston. Houston were only second to the Warriors in three-point shots made last season; if CP3 can get their offense more open looks then that is very bad news for the rest of the league.

How popular is basketball around the world?

Unlike football, rugby or cricket where there may be some debate about the best competition on the planet the summit when it comes to basketball is without a doubt the NBA.

That is not to say that other competitions do not exist though and there is an improving Euro League event which features many recognisable team names from the world of soccer including Real Madrid and Barcelona. There is plenty of opportunity to bet on this action as well but in truth, if you are keen basketball gambler your attention will always be drawn across the pond.

The regular season runs from October through to mid-April. Then, the postseson begins with the top eight sides from both east and west conferences until the best two meet in the final in June. The NBA champions for the season are then crowned handed the iconic Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy.
