Arsenal are struggling in the Premier League but are chasing another FA Cup victory. Our preview looks ahead to their semi-final clash with Manchester City at Wembley.
Last Hurrah for Arsene?
The FA Cup has saved Arsene Wenger on a few occasions in recent years, could it do so again this season? If there's an award for the luckiest cup draws of the season, Arsenal are going to win it hands down. Having to beat Sutton United and Lincoln City in the fifth round and quarter finals is as lucky as you can get but at times the Gunners still made a meal of it. You have to go back 113 years since Arsenal lost an FA Cup tie to Manchester City, rumours Wenger refused to resign are not true.
Champions League form isn't looking too likely this season but at least Arsenal fans will have something to do on a Thursday night next season and it'll make a change from losing to Bayern Munich every year. But will Wenger still be in charge or is he finally on his way out, years after most clubs would have sacked him. It's been a relatively easy ride to the semi-finals with the hardest game being their win at second-tier Preston North End in the third round after trailing 1-0. A comfortable win against Southampton reserves followed before taking on the National League duo of Sutton and Lincoln.
At least Arsenal come into this game on the back of a win after beating relegation doomed Middlesbrough on Easter Monday. A rare away win for the Gunners but again they didn't always look that impressive. If Middlesbrough had a goalie who doesn't stand on one side of the goal while watching Alexis Sanchez curl a free-kick into the opposite side, then they might not have won on Monday. Arsenal will be up for this game but like their opponents have one eye on improving their position in the Premier League. But can their defence cope against City's forwards?
City Forwards are the Key
What means most to Manchester City? Beating Arsenal to reach the final of the world's greatest tournament or ensuring they finish in the top four of the top league in English football? This game takes place just four days before City take on Manchester United in a game they dare not lose if they want to qualify to play alongside the best sides in Europe next season. Knowing how football is these days, it wouldn't surprise me if City left some players out for this tie but hopefully that won't be the case.
Manchester City haven't had too hard a task getting through to the FA Cup semi-finals scoring 15 goals and conceding just one in a home replay against Huddersfield Town. Recent form has been good considering who they have been playing against with draws against Liverpool and their opponents in this game, Arsenal. Only Chelsea and Monaco have been able to beat them in their last 17 league and cup games.
The last two games have seen them get good wins over Hull City and away at Southampton with three goals scored in both of those wins. Sergio Aguero is in top form with goals in each of his last five appearances for City. If he can continue his good form against a suspect Arsenal defence then this could be a long afternoon for the Gunners.
Manchester City are in good form at present and the same cannot be said for their opponents. Our preview concludes that it will be City who can get the win over the Londoners in this FA Cup semi-final.
