Group A Match Three Preview : Uruguay v Russia and Saudi Arabia v Egypt
Event Venue: Samara and Volgograd, Russia, Monday June 24th at 3pm. . Live on ITV.See Stats
Russia and Uruguay have won both matches while Saudi Arabia and Egypt have not won a point. A draw would be enough for Russia to win the group because they have a better goal difference than Uruguay by five goals. The group winners play the runners-up in Group B which could be one of three teams including Spain. Saudi Arabia and Egypt are already out of the tournament so they are playing to avoid finishing at the bottom of the group. The outcome of their match will depend on team selection and motivation and no side wants to lose all three group matches in the World Cup.
Uruguay v Russia
There was a chance that Russia could be just the second hosts not to progress to the progress beyond the first stage but they have recorded two wins and scored right goals. The standard of the opposition is questionable and Uruguay will provided the biggest challenge so far in the tournament. However, Russia are playing with confidence and scoring lots of goals. Uruguay have won both their matches one-nil and not been convincing. However, in Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani they have world class strikers who will test the Russian defence. Uruguay have not conceded a goal and the defence may have the quality that Egypt and Saudi Arabia lacked against Russia. The hosts have the momentum and the support of their country but a draw will suffice and they can achieve and win Group A and that outcome is 2/1 with William Hill.
Saudi Arabia v Egypt
This fixture brings together two sides that have lost their first two matches. The nations are playing for pride and third place in the group. Egypt have conceded three fewer goals so a draw would be enough to clinch third place. Egypt scored against Uruguay but not against Russia while Saudi Arabia have had two blanks in their matches. On collateral form Egypt are the better team and they can finish the tournament with a win which means Saudi Arabia will go home without winning a point and possibly without scoring a goal. The key difference between the sides is Mo Salah who scored Egypt’s goal against Uruguay and he will be by some distance the best player on the pitch. Very few players representing Saudi Arabia have experience of football in the top divisions and Egypt have the form and ability to pick up three points with Salah on the score sheet again (7/5 with Boylesports).
- Russia are the highest scoring team in the Group A with 8 goals.
- Saudi Arabia have not scored a goal.
- Three of the matches were won to nil.
- Both teams scored in one match.
- There were over 2.5 goals in two matches.
