Midweek Premier League Previews : Saints Need a Win
Event Venue: Various, Tuesday 17 April to Thursday 19 April 7.45pm. Live on Sky Sports and BT Sport.See Stats
The FA Cup semi-finals take place at the weekend so the four sides involved in those ties play their Premier League matches in midweek. Our preview looks ahead to the four games that have significance for who's going to finish second in the table, who will get a top four finish and who's likely to be getting relegated.
Brighton and Hove Albion v Tottenham - Tuesday 17 April 7.45pm
At the start of the season Brighton boss Chris Hughton would have bitten your hand off if offered 13th place in the table and seven points above the relegation zone with five games to go. However, he would have then acknowledged the fact that their last five games aren't likely to be providing that many points so there are still worries about an instant return to the second-tier of English football.
Brighton have five games left and they are against all of the current top four in England's top league plus in-form Burnley so any points they pick up will be a bonus, starting with this home game against Tottenham. Saturday saw them lose 3-2 at Crystal Palace and they have just one point from their last four league games. Home form has kept them out of the bottom three with ten points from their last five home league games but this is going to be a tough night for them. They struggle in games against the top sides with just one point from six games against teams currently in the top five, scoring just once and conceding 16 goals.
Tottenham lost at the weekend to see the gap betweem them and fifth placed Chelsea narrow to seven points. Before losing to the now Premier League champions, Spurs had won six straight league games and they are unbeaten in their last eight on the road. They face a side that hasn't kept a clean sheet in their last 12 league games and the likes of Kane, Erikksen, Ali and Son should be far too much for the home side in this game.

Bournemouth v Manchester United - Wednesday 18 April 7.45pm
Firstly a minutes silence for all those bets up and down the country that went down after Manchester United somehow lost at home to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday. That shock defeat ended United's title challenge in England's top league but they still have a good chance of finishing second in the Premier League table and a win here will take them four points clear of third. The loss to West Brom ened a run of five straight league wins and they have won both of their last two away league games by a 3-2 scoreline.
Bournemouth are 11th in the table and ten points above the bottom three so are all but safe. They seem to achieve safety without too many scares but really need to sort their defence out. 56 league goals conceded so far this season and only three other teams in the league have let in more than the south coast side. They seem to be plodding towards the end of the season with just one win in their last eight league games and that was a home win over West Brom, perhaps they can tell United how that's done. They struggle against the top sides and are yet to get a point against any of the sides in the top five and that quest for a point won't be achieved here with United tipped for the win.

Leicester City v Southampton - Thursday April 19 7.45pm
It's not looking good for Southampton after another defeat on Saturday. Leading 2-0 at home to Chelsea, it looked as if Mark Hughes might be getting his first win since taking over as boss but they collapsed to a 3-2 defeat leaving them five points adrift of safety. They have conceded three goals in each of thir last four matches and the last three away games. With more wins this year in the FA Cup than Premier League, Southampton have to get something from this game. They have just one win in their last 20 league matches and one victory in their last 14 away league games, just how they get out of this mess is a very difficult question to ask.
Losing at Burnley on Saturday looks to have ended any hope of Leicester playing in Europe next season as they now trail seventh place by eight points. They are having an inconsistent end to the season and have lost their last two league matches. Leicester have only lost one of their last seven home league games and up against a side that keeps conceding goals, Vardy and Mahrez could have a good night so back them to get a home win in this match.
Current odds for Leicester to beat Southampton are 5/4 with William Hill (18+ Ts & Cs Apply)
Burnley v Chelsea - Thursday 19 April 7.45pm
Both sides look likely to be playing Thursday night football next season but no prizes for guessing which of Burnley and Chelsea will be happiest about playing Europa League football. Burnley beat Leicester City on Saturday to move eight points clear of them in the table and as long as Southampton don't win the FA Cup this season, seventh place will get them into the Europa League. They are only six points behind Arsenal in sixth and play them in their last match. Saturday's win was their fifth straight victory in the Premier League and you do wonder what they might achieve if being able to score more goals.
Chelsea had that comeback win over Southampton at the weekend and are only seven points behind fourth placed Tottenham but that could be ten if Spurs win at Brighton on Tuesday. Anything but a Spurs win in that match could make the Champions League qualification situation a lot more interesting. Chelsea don't have the easiest of run-ins and you feel they need to win all five remaining games to stand a chance of making it into the top four. The win at Southampton ended a run of three straight away league defeats and they lack consistency. This preview concludes that you should go for Burnley on the double chance to either win or draw this match.
