PDC World Championship Preview : How Can You Oppose Michael Van Gerwen?
Event Venue: Alexandra Palace, London, Thursday December 14th at 19.00. Live on Sky Sports.See Stats
There is no doubt that Michael Van Gerwen is the best darts player in the world. He can confirm that status by winning the PDC version of the World Championship for the third time. At the end of October Van Gerwen withdrew for the German Masters due to an ankle injury but despite that handicap has kept winning and he cannot be opposed. You can back Van Gerwen or your selection using a bookmaker darts free bet.
However, the main talking point will be the retirement of Phil Taylor. The 14-times champion is playing his last event before hanging up his darts or putting them away in a safe place. A man who came second in the BBC’s Sports Personality of the year behind Tony McCoy in 2010 will want to end his career on a high but will find Van Gerwen a tough nut to crack if they meet at the quarter-final stage of the tournament.
Taylor is the number six seed for these championships and is clearly past his best. The legacy to the sport will last for ever and nobody will come close to winning 16 world titles. There have been signs of inconsistency and a little tetchiness so now is the right time to leave the stage. The game is in good hands with Van Gerwen who will be a multiple champion over the next 10 years.
The most successful darts player ever can be backed at 10/1 with the sponsors William Hill to claim a 17th World Championship victory. He won two world titles before the PDC was formed. Gary Anderson won the title in 2015 and 2016 and lost to Van Gerwen in the final last year. The number two seed is Peter Wright who has won 11 titles in 2017 including the UK Championship. An illness scare leading up to the event has done him no favours.
Sometimes in betting a short-priced favourite can offer some value and that is the case with Van Gerwen’s quote of 8/11 with Ladbrokes to win a third world title. After the initial event when there was a new champion 12 winners have won in successive years but on 10 occasions that champion was Taylor. Adrian Lewis and Anderson have successfully defended so a precedent has been set. Van Gerwen can joint that group this time.
There were suggestions Van Gerwen may miss some events in November so he was fully fit for the World Championship. Instead he embarked on an orgy of winning and in the last five weeks has won the European Championship, the World Series of Darts, the Grand Slam and Players Championship Finals. He is hardly likely to lose his form in the tournament that matters most.
Van Gerwen beat Jonny Clayton 11-2 in the Players Championship Finals decider while averaging 105.50 which means every time he goes to the ochre on average his three darts earn him more than 100 points. That form and Van Gerwen’s position as the undisputed number one player in the world makes him the man to back in the 2017/2018 PDC world championships of darts.
MICHAEL VAN GERWEN is the best player so can win the PDC darts world title again.
