Watford V Liverpool Preview : Can the Hornets get revenge on Emre Can?
Event Venue: Vicarage Road, Kick off: 12:30. Sky Sports.See Stats
When these two sides met last season, a freak wonder goal from Emre Can separated the sides and Liverpool marched on into the Champions League places while Watford meandered in the mid-table. Now, both sides will be starting from scratch and looking to assert themselves early on the opening Saturday of the Premier League season. Which side will emerge victorious from this lunchtime kick off?
Silva is better than gold
Watford have been a side who have made a lot of progress in a short space of time, but what was once working for them isn't anymore. The loan deals and doing parent clubs a favour will only get you so far and now the club need to build their own future with their own core. In signing Will Hughes, Nathaniel Chalobah and Tom Cleverly, the Hornets have done some brilliant business at a fraction of the cost when you consider today's market. They have installed an English core that also has age on its side and plenty Watford fans will think it is about time. Elsewhere, right back Kiko has arrived but otherwise, not much has changed. Not being able to permanently secure M'Baye Niang was a blow and now the Hertfordshire side looks like they lack a bit of creativity in wide areas. Are there enough goals in this side?
Klopp & the Kop
Liverpool have looked fantastic in pre-season. The Reds have won a friendly competition and got to the final of another before losing on penalties in another. In the latter competition, it's worth noting that they destroyed Bayern Munich en route to the final and this is finally beginning to look like a real Jurgen Klopp side. Mohamed Salah has joined for around £35 million from Roma and his pace in the front line alongside Sadio Mane is frightening. Coutinho has been playing in a deeper role and dominating games in the process. If the Reds can fend off Barcelona for his services they can do big things this season. Andrew Robertson has also relieved James Milner of playing left-back and the red half of Merseyside really are only one of two players away from being serious title contenders this season. Can they repeat their result at Watford last season?
Liverpool have looked formidable this summer and have dictated the play in virtually every game they have played - which includes the likes of Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich. Watford have certainly improved, but do they have the attacking tools to really trouble teams? That will be a recurring question and I believe given the current confidence at Anfield, the away side will edge this one.
- Emre Can's wonder goal gave Liverpool a 1-0 win in this fixture last season
- Watford have a new boss in former Hull man, Marco Silva
- Liverpool qualified for the Champions Leageue this season
- The Reds have beaten Bayern Munich in pre-season
