West Ham United v Chelsea Preview : Can Moyes get his first win?
Event Venue: London Stadium, Kick off: 12:30. Sky Sports.See Stats
West Ham will face Premier League champions Chelsea in Saturday's lunchtime kick-off, and things just aren't getting any easier for Hammers boss David Moyes. Chelsea enter this fixture as the form side in the league not named Man City and fresh off a draw with Atletico Madrid. As for West Ham, they've lost four of their last six games and Moyes is still looking for his first win since becoming West Ham boss. Now, in a London derby, can West Ham continue improving and pick up that important first win?
When West Ham went to Manchester City last week, you could get better odds on the home side winning 8-0 than West Ham winning 1-0. And yet, at half-time, the Hammers were winning 1-0. Moyes has also overseen a comeback draw against Leicester, an end-to-end loss to Watford and a Wayne Rooney-inspired 4-0 loss to Everton. Still, fans have noticed some sign of life since the former Manchester United boss took over and they successfully frustrated City last weekend, even looking dangerous on the counter. The return of Michail Antonio certainly helped that, but the Irons just look far more organised and disciplined than they once did. If Moyes can restrict the goals going in against them, surely West Ham have the quality to preserve their Premier League status come next May. But, how will they fare against Chelsea? A very similar gameplan to the Man City fixture awaits.
Chelsea won this fixture back in March 2-1 and the London Stadium hasn't been great to the Hammers since they moved into it at the beginning of last season. The Blues still haven't quite hit top form this season; when they won the league the season prior, their defence was air-tight and they were winning the vital games. While they have won four of their last six games, they have drawn with Liverpool and Manchester United in their big games. They also drew with Arsenal earlier this season, so have they lost their killer edge? David Luiz has also been dropped from the Chelsea squad recently and one has to wonder if Antonio Conte is really still invested n the project at Stamford Bridge. However, Chelsea are only nine points behind league leaders Man City and are firmly in the hunt.
Moyes is certainly making strides with West Ham, but it just so happens he has a terrible run of fixtures that he can't do much about. If the Hammers had a full complement, you could fancy them given Chelsea's slips this season, but this game comes too soon for them.
- Chelsea and West Ham have both won twice during their last five meetings
- David Moyes is still looking for his first victory as West Ham boss
- Chelsea beat West Ham 2-1 the last time they met at the London Stadium
